Abolition of Driving Licence Counterpart 03 - June - 2015

Abolition of Driving Licence Counterpart

On the 8th June 2015 the paper counterpart to the photocard driving licence will be abolished. This means that driving convictions and penalty points will no longer be displayed on any driving licence.
When you hire a vehicle after this date you may be asked to provide certain information from your driving record – such as details of any penalty points you may have. You can do this online via DVLA’s ‘Share Your Licence’ service.

There are 2 steps to this process - 1 for the driver and 1 for the hire company.
Step 1. This step is for you as the driver. You’ll need to log on to the View Driving Licence service on GOV.UK and click on ‘Share your licence’. This will generate a unique one-time use access code that you’ll need to share with the hire company, along with the last 8 digits of your driving licence number.
You’ll also have the option to download a summary of your driving licence information and access code and send it to the hire company.
Step 2. This step is for the hire company. Once you give them the access code it can be used with the last 8 digits of your driving licence number to view appropriate information from your DVLA driving record.

Drivers with old style paper driving licences issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998 can also use the Share Driving Licence service.
For more information on these changes and abolition of the counterpart visit GOV.UK and search nomorecounterpart or view video »

Low Emission Zone 06 - December - 2011

Low Emission Zone

The operators of some 75,000 HGVs, buses and coaches and 72,000 larger vans and minibuses will have to take action to meet tougher Low Emission Zone standards.

Since 2008 the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) has been in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year across Greater London and has been really successful in cutting air pollution. The most individually polluting vehicles driving in London are encouraged to clean up but now more needs to be done.

The LEZ currently applies to lorries, buses and coaches and from January 2012 there will be higher emission standards set for these vehicles. Also in January 2012 the scheme will be extended to include larger vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles for the first time.

Vehicles that do not meet the required standards must pay a daily charge of either £200 (lorries, buses and coaches) or £100 (larger vans and minibuses) to drive in London or risk penalties of up to £1,000 per day.

Operators have several options meet the standards including :

  • fitting approved filters to existing vehicles
  • replacing vehicles with newer models
  • rent a vehicle for short term or very infrequent visits
  • paying the daily charge

Download the L.E.Z. leaflet or check how you are affected at Transport For London.
